Addiction to Perfection

Perfection is finally attained not when there is no longer anything to add but when there is no longer anything to take away...

I'm sure this hasn't come up for you, but I know it has for some folks, and it sounds something like this:

  • Let me just play with the colors one more time, and then I'll publish it.

  • Just one more edit, and then I can release it.

  • Just one more lap, and then I'll be ready.

  • Just one more _____(fill in the blank), and then I can _______ (take action)... because it will be PERFECT!

WOW!

Once it's PERFECT, I'll never have to think about it again. Once it's PERFECT, I'll attract the ideal client to my business. Once it's PERFECT, I'll not spend one more minute worrying about it because, well, it's PERFECT!

So we fret, and we edit, and we rework it, and we rewrite it, recompose it, resew it, rehearse it, rerun it, reconstruct it, reconsider it, re-review it, reset it, reconceptualize it, re-form it, restructure it, reseed it, research it, re-create it, rearrange it, reconfigure it, restart it, refashion it, reproduce it, reform it, recraft it, redesign it, reposition it, reorganize it, replace it, and in general make ourselves crazy!

...and in the meantime, our critical window of opportunity slams shut!

So ask yourself the following questions:

  • What aspects of my business and/or personal life have I decided must be PERFECT?

  • What would happen if I "finished" and released it before I got it to "PERFECT"?

  • What am I really afraid of? (Really...)
